The basics
The currency is the Ugandan shilling (UGX). Roughly 1 USD ≈ 3,800 UGX (rate varies — check before you travel).
ATMs
Stanbic, Centenary, Equity and Absa ATMs in Kampala and major towns accept Visa and Mastercard. Daily limit usually 1,000,000 UGX (~$260).
Cards
Most hotels, restaurants and lodges in Kampala accept cards. Smaller places, markets, boda-bodas — cash only.
USD
Many tour operators (including HIVE) quote in USD. You can pay in USD cash (clean, post-2013 bills) or via card. Bring $100s — they get the best exchange rate.
Tipping
Not expected, but appreciated. 10% in nice restaurants, ~$5–10/day for safari drivers and guides.
